Title:
“Microbial Ecology for Engineering Biology: measurement, theory and mulstiscale simulation”
Abstract:
If the 19th and 20th Centuries were Engineering was dominated by the physical sciences and transformational engineering solutions were because engineers were able to draw on the laws of physics to facilitate design. Many hope for an equivalent revolution in Biological Engineering in the 21st century driven by the  ongoing revolution in Microbial Ecology.  However there is a gap between the essentially observational approach of modern microbial ecology and the engineers needs for a predictive tools.  In this talk I shall describe how to connect microbial ecology,  ecological theory and multiscale simulation to develop new strategies for developing novel biological treatment solutions  quickly and cheaply.
